JALANDHAR: Expressing deep anguish on the
communal violence witnessed in northeast Delhi over the past days, The
Sikh Forum, has said that the ghastly situation is eerily reminiscent of that which occurred 35 years back, in November 1984 when politically led gangs murdered thousands of innocent Sikhs in the capital city of India and other places.
“We reiterate that one of the guiding principles of the
Sikh faith is protection of the weak, and is echoed in the
Indian Constitution with its emphasis on minority rights. We strongly urge the government to take all possible steps to ensure peace and harmony and not let the situation deteriorate,” said Sikh Forum president
Pushpinder Singh Chopra and retired DIG Partap Singh in a joint statement. The Sikh Forum has also said that peace should be restored immediately and security should be provided to all communities, without bias or prejudice and relief efforts to be carried out on an emergency basis.
Meanwhile
Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee has also said that riot victims can have shelter and food in the gurdwaras. “Gurdwaras will provide shelter to all irrespective of their religious identity,” said DSGMC president
Manjinder Singh Sirsa.
