ALLAHABAD: The
Allahabad high court on Tuesday directed the CBI to probe into the murder of mafia don Prem Prakash Singh alias Munna Bajrangi inside Baghpat district jail on July 9, 2018.
Hearing a writ petition filed by Bajrangi's widow Seema Singh, a division bench comprising Justice Sudhir Agarwal and Justice Rajeev Mishra, directed the CBI to file a progress report of the investigation by April 20, the next date of hearing. The petitioner's contention was that there might be involvement of mafia elements behind the murder of her husband.
Alleging that the role of jail officials was also doubtful, she pleaded that the investigation must be transferred to the CBI to unearth the conspiracy behind the killing.
Bajrangi had been lodged in Jhansi jail from where was brought to Baghpat jail on July 8, 2018 for a hearing. The next morning, he was shot by a prisoner identified as strongman Sunil Rathi. During the course of hearing, the state government had opposed the petition on the ground that there was no need for a CBI probe as three inquires were already under way in the matter. The first inquiry is being conducted under the Baghpat district Judge, the second by the Baghpat DM while the third is being conducted by the Baghpat jail authorities.
Munna Bajrangi, a sharpshooter having alleged links with mafia-turned-politican Mukhtar Ansari, was murdered in Baghpat district jail on July 9, 2018. He was shot 10 times in the head inside the jail premises itself allegedly by Rathi.
