NEW DELHI: US President
Donald Trump wrote a note of thanks for his "great friend" Prime Minister
Narendra Modi in the visitors' book at
Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad on Monday.
The US President, along with his wife
Melania Trump, arrived at the Ashram shortly after landing at the Ahmedabad airport for the first leg of his two-day visit to India.
"To my great friend Prime Minister Modi...Thank You For This Wonderful Visit!" the US President wrote in the visitors' book of the Ashram.
Interestingly, there wasn't any mention of Mahatma Gandhi in Trump's note.
Located in the Sabarmati suburb of Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on the banks of the River Sabarmati, the Ashram was one of the many residences of Mahatma Gandhi who lived at Sabarmati and Sevagram (Wardha, Maharashtra) when he was not travelling across India and was not in prison.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who reached the Ashram a few minutes earlier, showed Trump and the US First Lady 'Hriday Kunj', a room inside the Ashram where Gandhiji and his wife Kasturba lived.
At the Ashram, the Trumps also tried their hands at spinning the
charkha. The US President was briefed about Gandhiji and the importance of charkha as a symbol of self-reliance. Modi also explained the importance of this place in India's freedom struggle.
Later, the Prime Minister presented "Three Wise Monkeys," a larger version of one belonging to Mahatma Gandhi, as a memento to the US president.
Accompanied by PM Modi, the US president and his wife went around the Ashram, before resuming the roadshow from the airport to the Motera stadium. The Trumps were in the Ashram for around 15 minutes.
