Jharkhand: Protesters demand resolution against CAA in budget session

RANCHI: Hundreds of students, under the banner Joint Students' Union, staged a dharna for two hours on Sunday at Albert Ekka Chowk to protest against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register for Citizens (NRC) and the proposed National Population Register (NPR). Before staging the dharna, the students took out a procession from Sainik Market to Albert Ekka Chowk.
With a demand from chief minister Hemant Soren to declare that the laws will not be implemented in the state, the protesters raised slogans against the citizenship laws. Former students' union president of Marwari College Md Asif Hussain, who led the agitation, said, "We have formed the Joint Students' Union to carry out protests against the laws. The union is on a protest path since February 5."
The protest blocked traffic movement at the busy intersection and police had a tough time managing vehicles in the area. The agitation was eventually withdrawn after the local administration intervened and assured the the government will be apprised about the demands of the students. Asif added, "The officials assured us that they will arrange a meeting with the CM on the issues by February 26. If they fail to keep their promise, we will protest during the budget session."
Meanwhile, the indefinite dharna staged by the women near Haj House in Kadru against CAA, NRC and the NPR continued on Sunday. Tanvir Ahmad, a member of the organising committee, said thousands of women from far-flung villages gathered at the venue to express their support for the cause. Ahmad also informed that former JNU students' union president Kanhaiya Kumar is scheduled to address the gathering on February 28. Ahmad informed, "The protesters demanded that government should make a declaration during the budget session that it will not implement the laws in Jharkhand."
Meanwhile, the Bharat Bandh called by Bhim Army on Sunday to protest against the denial of reservation in promotion had little impact in Ranchi.
