PANAJI: Two years after two passengers were killed while alighting from a bus at the Kadamba
Transport Corporation (KTC) bus stand in Panaji, the corporation is yet to ensure the safety of passengers by restoring the zebra crossing that has faded.
A speeding bus hit five passengers inside the KTC bus stand on the morning of February 17, 2018, killing two and injuring three.
The issue was discussed at a round table meet on youth and road safety organised by the Goa consumer action network (Goacan) last week, on the second anniversary of the accident.
After the accident, a site inspection was held by representatives from transport department, traffic police, health services, PWD and the inspection report, which gave recommendations for KTC to follow up on, stated “the central zebra crossing required to be restored URGENTLY”. The main bus stand in Panaji had a zebra crossing that ran from the point where the Dona Paula buses park, and across the bus bays, down to the other end. This would not only force buses to stop at the zebra crossing but also prevented them from parking haphazardly, assuring the public of safe passage right through it.
“The problem arises when one alights or enters from the bus bay where Dona Paula buses are parked and has to walk through the bays to take a
Mapusa bus or
Margao shuttle bus. The accident took place right in the middle of the bays,” Goacan coordinator Roland Martins said.
KTC chairman Carlos Almeida told TOI, “If it is necessary, we will definitely reinstate it(the zebra crossing)”.
