Rajkot:
As many as 50 pickpockets, chain snatchers and mobile thieves had been nabbed during the four-day Maha Shivratri fair in Bhavnath Taleti (valley) of Junagadh that concluded on Saturday morning.
Deputy superintendent of police Pradeepsinh Jadeja had formed four teams of Rajkot special operation group, local crime branch and D staff of Bhavnath police station along with Junagadh A division and B division police stations.
“The cops dressed in plain clothes mingled themselves into the crowd and nabbed 50 persons on the basis of suspicion. When we check the criminal records of those arrested on Pocket Cop App, we found that 12 were history-sheeters involved in pickpocketing, cellphone thefts and chain snatching,” said DySP Jadeja.
The Pocket Cop App is a special mobile application designed under e-Gujcop project launched by the state government.
The arrested accused were from Rajkot, Junagadh, Porbandar, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Surendranagar and Gir Somnath districts.
A total of 15 cellphones lost in the fair were found by the police and returned to their owners. During this year’s fair, a total of 370 cases of purse and cellphone thefts were reported.
