Gurugram: Key road closed by a few illegally, allege residents

The protesters urged police to take steps to resolve the situation
GURUGRAM: Hundreds of residents of Sushant Lok 1, DLF-IV and several highrises held a protest on Sunday demanding access to an arterial road, which they alleged was being controlled by a few people.
The residents said for the past few weeks, Umeed Marg, the road connecting MG Road metro station to Sushant Lok 1 and DLF-IV, has been closed and claimed that some people had constructed gates and employed private guards there. This, they added, had resulted in traffic congestion during peak hours.
The protesters met the station house officer of Sector 29 police station and urged police to take immediate steps to resolve the situation.
Among those affected by the road closure include residents of Laburnum, The IVY, Maple Residence and Chanderlok, as well as commuters to Vakil Market Association and Holtec Centre.
“Some people have put up barriers for their own benefit. They are causing inconvenience to the residents. School buses and taxis are not allowed to enter, which is unethical and illegal,” said Aman Kapoor, who lives in Sushant Lok 1.
The protesters said senior citizens and children were the worst hit as they now have to travel for longer periods.
“Because of some residents, we are forced to take an alternative route which is longer than the usual one. We have been living in the area for the past 10 years but never faced this kind of attitude,” Ankita Das, another resident said.
Many protesters also demanded removal of the newly-constructed speed breakers on the 300-metre stretch, saying senior citizens were having health issues.
Satpal Kochhar, a resident, said 12 speed breakers for the stretch were not needed, adding, “We have discussed the issue with police and demanded their removal.”
Meanwhile, an officer at Sector 29 police station said, “We will work to reduce the speed breakers. For security reasons, commuters will need to make an entry in the register after 11pm daily. Traffic movement will not be restricted during the day.”
