While he remained unmarried throughout his life, there has always been the notion that he never had a woman in his life, but this is a myth. He had a filmy love story, which began in his college days in the mid-1940s when he graduated from the Maharani Laxmi Bai Government College of Excellence (formerly known as Victoria College) in Gwalior.

There, she met the very beautiful, Princess Kaul, who was one of the most famous dynastic families. At that sight, Atal Ji fell in love at first sight. He somehow dared to write a love letter to the princess by keeping it inside the library book, but he could not find the answer. This does not mean that the princess did not respond; She replied to him but unfortunately, the book could not reach Atal Ji. Due to this misunderstanding, Atal Ji thought that she was not interested in him and he moved on.

The princess wanted to marry Atal Ji and Atal Ji belonged to the same Brahmin caste as her, but the princess belonged to a rich and noble family, while Atal Ji belonged to a middle-class family. The princess chose her family, as a perfect obedient daughter. After the 1947 riots, her family took her to Delhi, and later, she married a Delhi-based professor, Brij Narayan Kaul in Gwalior, while Atal Ji remained unmarried.

As it is often said, true love never dies, they met in Delhi in the mid-1960s when Atal became a leader of the Jana Sangh and a Rajya Sabha MP, and Rajkumari lived a family life with her husband, her husband was working as Professor of Philosophy at Ramjas College, University of Delhi.

Atal Ji often visited Ramjas College warden's quarters at his home, where he was often joined by the hostel students for an evening treat and then Atal Ji started staying with the Kaul family at his house. In the late 1970s, when Atalji was the foreign minister in Morarji Desai's Janata government, Rajkumari, her husband, and their two daughters moved to Atalji's Lutyens residence in Delhi. Atal ji's stay with the Kaul family was criticized in political circles. According to reports, there, she worked as an informal secretary, receiving his calls. According to some sources, Atal ji's daughter Namita Bhattacharya is believed to be the alleged daughter of Atal Ji and Princess Kaul.
