TRICHY: Retail vegetable traders in Srirangam who function from the space allotted to them by the Trichy Corporation staged a protest at the collectorate on Monday. The traders alleged that Trichy Corporation was not taking action against the makeshift daily retail vegetable markets in Srirangam which play a spoilsport to their revenue.
The protesting retail vegetable traders from the Srirangam Town Vegetable Seller Association said around 150 traders were paying rent and occupying the shops allotted to them by Trichy Corporation in Srirangam.
However, some other traders were conducting daily makeshift vegetable markets in Srirangam in the past few weeks. The association said these traders were jeopardising the business of the association members.
“Though we petitioned the civic body to stop the daily markets, it didn’t act. The local body should support us,” R Govindaraj, president of Srirangam town vegetable seller association, said.
Following the protest, the district administration instructed the revenue department and the local body to hold a peace talk with traders.
