AGRA: Taking US President
Donald Trump and his
wife Melania Trump for a guided tour around Taj Mahal was a “lifetime dream” come true for 36 years old Nitin Singh, who has spent 12 years in this profession.
Talking to TOI, Nitin said, “I could have asked for nothing more than this opportunity and I thank god for it”. He described Trump as an extremely “kind and lively person”.
Nitin confessed that before meeting Trump, he had thought that he too would a VVIP who usually keeps a straight face. So it was an obvious surprise for him to find Trump to be very friendly and jovial.
“He was so friendly that he obliged everyone with selfies and photos. He did not say no to anyone”, said Nitin.
“Taj Mahal is the monument that gives goosebumps to every VVIP visitor and President Trump could not control himself and he praised its architecture, inlay and stonework and the double dome structure”, said Nitin, who has had the opportunity to guide several VVIPs to the monument.
“Taj Mahal inspires Awe and a timeless testament to the rich and diverse beauty of Indian culture! Thank you India,” wrote Trump after his visit to the 17th-century monument.
Nitin said the US President and his wife asked him several questions, pertaining to the constitution of the monument. “Where did all this marble come from? Where were the workers and artisans brought from? What material was used for making the royal gate?”, were some of the questions that Nitin had to respond to. He said the US president also asked him about how the monument was being kept clean and what was the procedure for doing so.
He said the President was impressed to know the love story of the
Shahjahan and Mumtaz, but he felt bad that the empower was kept behind the bars for eight years in Agra Quila.
He said the President was very much impressed to see the beauty of the main mausoleum’s work. Nitin said, “the first lady asked me if the work on the main mausoleum was painting and I told her that was stonework”.
He said Trump also witnessed the sunset along with his wife at the Taj. He was accompanied by his daughter
Ivanka Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner and other top US officials. He, however, did not go towards the Yamuna side.
Nitin claimed that the President said that he “loved the monument” and after his visit, the number of American tourists to Taj will increase.
The visiting dignitaries spent over an hour at the historic monument, constructed by Mughal emperor Shahjahan in memory of his wife
Mumtaz Mahal.
Nitin, who is a licensee holder of the department of Tourism in Government, was selected to guide Trump after the US embassy interviewed over 50 guides. Nitin has guided several dignitaries including Prime Minister of Israel,
Benjamin Netanyahu (Jan 2018) and Canada Justin Trudeau along with his family members (Feb 2018), Presidents of France,
Emmanuel Macron (March 2018), Uzbekistan (Oct 2018), Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Mongolia Khaltmaagiin Battulga along with Crown princess Victoria of Sweden, who visited Taj in 2008 as the main guide.
Besides, he was the and the guide for King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium in November 2017, Oscar-winning actor
Ben Kingsley, who visited Taj Mahal in December 2009 with his wife and Hollywood muscleman and former California governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger who visited the monument in February 2012.
