Clashes over citizenship law in Delhi: Key points

NEW DELHI: A Delhi Police head constable was killed on Monday during clashes over the new citizenship law in northeast Delhi, a senior officer said. Tension escalated in northeast Delhi where pro and anti-CAA groups clashed for the second consecutive day and hurled stones at each other. Here are the key points:
Head constable killed
A Delhi Police head constable was killed on Monday during clashes. Ratan Lal was attached to the office of the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Gokulpuri, police officials said.
Several police personnel have been injured in the clashes, they said.
Several vehicles, shops and houses were torched on Monday, a day after clashes broke out between those against and for the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.
Violence was also reported from the Chandbagh area in Jaffrabad.
Police resort to lathicharge
Police fired tear gas shells and also resorted to lathicharge to disperse the protesters.
The Delhi Metro closed entry and exit at the Jaffrabad and Maujpur-Babarpur stations as an uneasy calm prevailed in the area.
"Entry & exit of Jaffrabad and Maujpur-Babarpur are closed. Trains will not be halting at these stations," the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation said in a tweet.
Entry and exit were closed at the Jaffrabad metro station for over 24 hours.
LG instructs police commissioner to maintain law and order
Delhi Lt Governor Anil Baijal instructed the police commissioner to maintain law and order in the national capital in the wake of violence during clashes in northeast Delhi.
"Instructed @DelhiPolice and @CPDelhi to ensure that law and order is maintained in North East Delhi. The situation is being closely monitored. I urge everyone to exercise restraint for maintenance of peace and harmony," Baijal tweeted.
Police urge for calm
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Northeast Ved Prakash Surya took stock of the situation and said that they have spoken to both sides to calm the situation.
"We have spoken to both sides, now the situation is calm. We are continuously speaking to people and now the situation is under control," he said.
Meanwhile, Section 144 of CrPC has been imposed at 10 locations in the North-east district of the national capital after the clash.
CM Kejriwal urges LG, HM to restore law and order
Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal urged Lt Governor Anil Baijal and Union home minister Amit Shah to restore law and order in the wake of violence in parts of northeast Delhi.
"Very distressing news regarding disturbance of peace and harmony in parts of Delhi coming in.
Clashes started on Sunday
Tension prevailed in Jaffrabad area and a large number of security personnel were deployed as hundreds of people, mostly women, who had been protesting gainst the CAA, blocked a road near the metro station since Saturday evening, demanding a rollback of the contentious act.
Chandra Shekhar Aazad-led Bhim Army had also given call for 'Bharat bandh' and demonstrations against the CAA.
Similar protests, which mirrored the Shaheen Bagh sit-in where demonstrators have blocked a road since December, started in Khureji Khaas in Karawal Nagar and Chandbagh in northeast Delhi, and Hauz Rani in South Delhi on Sunday, prompting the police to step up security.
Police had to fire tear gas shells as members of the two groups pelted stones at each other in Maujpur, soon after a gathering, called by BJP leader Kapil Mishra, demanded that the police remove anti-CAA protestors within three days.
The two groups blamed each other for starting the violence.
