Youth arrested for slashing Coimbatore college woman’s throat with blade

COIMBATORE: Police arrested a 21-year-old youth in Vellakinaru on the outskirts of Coimbatore on Sunday for slashing the throat of a college woman with a blade after she refused accept his proposal.
The accused has been identified as M Muthukaruppan alias Ranjith of Gandhipuram. The victim, who sustained injuries on her neck, legs and hands, was admitted to a private hospital.
“The accused, who was senior to the victim in college, had an unrequited love with her. The accused had proposed to the victim several times, but the woman had refused to accept it. Even after completing his college, he attempted to talk to her when she was on her way to college. But the victim did not reciprocate his feelings,” said a police official.
Frustrated over the refusal, the youth went to her home on Thursday when she was alone. He forced her to accept his proposal. “But when she refused, he verbally abused her,” the official said.
He then slashed her throat, hands and legs with a blade that he had carried with him. He splashed chilli powder all over her. The accused fled the spot immediately after the girl started to scream.
Hearing her scream, neighbours rushed to her home. The sent her to a private hospital.
Based on a complaint from her mother, the Thudiyalur police registered a case the against the youth under sections 294 (b) (for using obscene words), 448 (punishment for trespassing into a house), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt with dangerous weapons) and 506 (ii) (criminal intimidation) of the IPC and arrested him.
