HYDERABAD: A night of drunken revelry with old friends left three dead and one injured after their car hit a tree and turned turtle in Saroornagar limits in the wee hours of Sunday. The man who survived was the only one wearing a seat belt. The accident occurred at around 2am near Karmanghat Sagar road when the six friends — four in car and two on a bike — were returning from Gurram Guda in Ranga Reddy district after a party.
The victims were identified as Vinayak Malikarjuna (29), a software engineer from New Saidabad; P Sainath (27), a private employee from Saraswati Nagar in Saidabad; and Sreeram Naik (28), a software engineer from Santosh Nagar. M Ramaprasad Kalyan (28), a private employee, who suffered head and internal injuries, has been admitted to hospital, cops said.
According to police, the six men were friends since college and had planned a party as they were meeting after one year. “While returning, Vinayak lost control due to high speed and slammed the Hyundai i20 into a tree. All the four were drunk. The two other friends on the bike called for help,” said Saroornagar inspector Srinivas Reddy.
“Seat belt saved Kalyan, who was in the rear seat. The other three were not wearing seat belts and died on the spot with severe head and multiple injuries. Only the driver’s air bag opened after the accident,” said another cop.
“Kalyan is still unaware that the other three have died. It will be a shock to him as all of them have been close since college days,” said Srinivas K, uncle of one of the victims, Sainath.
The bodies of the victims were shifted to Osmania General Hospital for post-mortem. A case was registered under IPC Sections 304-A (causing death by negligence) and 337 (Causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others).
