NEW DELHI:
Airport Express Line of Delhi Metro, which already has smartphone-enabled QR code-based ticketing facility for single journeys, is extending the facility for trip-based journeys from Monday.
With the introduction of this facility, commuters, especially those using trip passes (a type of smart card valid only on Airport Line), will be able to use the QR code generated on their phones, instead of the usual practice of purchasing or recharging their trip passes from metro stations.
“The move will do away with the need for a passenger desirous of availing QR code facility to have a physical trip pass separately and subsequent queuing up at stations to recharge them from time to time,” a DMRC spokesperson said.
Data from Delhi Metro shows that the Airport Line is used by over 60,000 passengers daily, of which around 65% use trip passes for their travel, which offers discount of up to 40% for every journey in comparison to single journey tokens/QR tickets.
The system of trip-based ticketing through QR code using smartphones is expected to enable passengers to purchase trip-based tickets using ‘Ridlr or Paytm application’ — the agencies that have tied up with DMRC for this facility.
Explaining the process to generate QR code for trip-based journey, the spokesperson said: “Users can download either the Ridlr or Paytm app and register with their valid credentials and mobile number. They can then proceed to buy a QR code-based trip ticket by selecting the origin station and destination station. They can then select number of trips, with options like 10 trips, 15 day validity, 30 trips or 45 trips. The app will display the fare for the selected number of trips and the payment can be made by various digital platforms.”
The app will display the QR code for the journey trips and the user can tap the code at AFC entry gates of metro stations on Airport Line.
“At the exit, user will tap the QR code at the exit AFC gate. The gates will open and the journey will conclude with the deduction of one trip from the QR code ticket,” the spokesperson added. All six stations of Airport Line have been equipped with a set of two AFC gates each for entry and exit through the QR enabled system.
