Jailed doctor Kafeel Khan’s uncle shot dead over ‘land row’

GORAKHPUR: Dr Kafeel Khan’s maternal uncle was allegedly shot dead in front of his house in Rajghat area over a land dispute on Saturday night. Two persons have been booked for murder, on the basis of the family’s complaint.
Khan, a paediatrician suspended from Gorakhpur BRD Medical College in 2017, was arrested last month for allegedly making inflammatory statements during anti-CAA protests in Aligarh Muslim University. He was also charged with the National Security Act.
Police said Dr Nusratullah Warsi (55), a property dealer, was returning from his neighbour’s house, where he had gone to play carom, when he was shot. Hearing gunfire, his family rushed out only to see him lying in a pool of blood.
In their police complaint, the family has named Imamuddin of Kotwali and Anil Sonkar of Gorakhnath as murder suspects. A hunt has been launched to nab them. Cops added that the attackers may have been acquainted with Warsi as they knew his routine.
Police said the motive for murder seemed to be a property dispute, as per preliminary investigation. “In November last year, Warsi had won a case related to 4.5-acre land from Imamuddin and Nikhat Ara after they had illegally registered the land in their name. Warsi also had a dispute with Imamuddin for 12-acre land in Siddharthnagar. Sonkar had invested Rs 1.9 crore in Warsi’s construction company and was trying to get his money back,” Kotwali CO V P Singh said.
An FIR has been registered against two persons under sections 302 (murder) and 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC.
