Dissent is fine, but nobody should be allowed to speak against nation: Vice President Naidu

PANAJI: "Citizens should not only be concerned about their fundamental rights, but also their fundamental duties. Dissent is okay, but nobody can be allowed to obstruct and speak against the country," Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu said on Monday, speaking at the convocation ceremony of Goa University.
“Don’t be negative. We are not under foreign rule. We are under our own rule. You have every right to change the government. Every five years you get a beautiful opportunity to do it silently. There is no need for violence. Violence has no place in democracy. Be constructive, not obstructive or disruptive. Development happens through a positive outlook. Join the forces of growth,” said Naidu.
The Vice President also said that Pakistan should not meddle in India’s internal affairs. He said that with the global watchdog Financial Action Task Force stating that Pakistan should be on the grey list for monitoring of its record in terror financing, the global community must exert greater pressure to hold Pakistan accountable on terrorism.
“I was just going through a report of the Financial Action Task Force, global watchdog, to keep Pakistan in the grey list to monitor its record in terror financing. It is a great reminder to the global community to exert greater pressure on our neighbouring country and to hold Pakistan accountable on terrorism,” said Naidu.
In some states they are also making reading the Constitution’s preamble a must for students. It is good and indeed a positive sign, said Naidu.
“Every citizen must follow the Constitution in letter and spirit. We should not only be concerned about the fundamental rights, but also about our duties. Rights and duties are like two sides of the same coin. Without either, the coin is incomplete,” said Naidu.
If the country’s democracy has to be made strong and stable then the electorate must choose men with character, calibre, capacity and conduct, he said. “Some people who do not have these are coming up with alternative four ‘c’ - caste, community, cash, criminality. They are trying to mislead the people, it is a fact and reality. We must not fall prey,” said Naidu.
