Thousands of people thronged to Shiv temples in the city on the occasion ofMaha Shivaratri. The Lingaraj temple in Old Town area witnessed large number of devotees throughout the day.
For this auspicious occasion, the temple was opened early in the morning, as devotees made serpentine lines near the shrine and waited for their turns to enter inside to offer their prayers. Several other Shiv temples also saw huge crowd. Many people also observed a day-long fast wishing good health for their family members and near and dear ones. As per beliefs, people break their fast after seeing the auspicious lamp, known as Mahadeep, being raised to the top of the temple. The temple administrations make arrangements for swift conduct of carrying the Mahadeep to the temple top. As large number of devotees gathered near the shiv temples, the police administration also swung into action by making arrangements for people to have a peaceful darshan of the deity and the Mahadeep in the night. “It’s one festival, I observe religiously. I have been fasting since morning and have not even taken water. I believe in Lord Shiva and his divine powers. It’s time to wish wellbeing of fellow people,” said Anu Chaudhury, actress.
