AMRITSAR: Probably for the first time in the history of independent India a jathedar of Sikh’s supreme temporal seat Akal Takht met with the family members of a Pakistani Sikh girl who was allegedly abducted, forcibly converted to Islam and married to a Muslim man in
Pakistan.
According to sources jathedar of Akal Takht Giani Harpreet Singh who is currently on a visit to Pakistan to attend a function held to mark the Saka Nankana (Nankana massacre) met with Manmohan Singh and other relatives of
Jagjit Kaur at
Nankana Sahib on Friday evening.
Sources informed that the family members of Kaur explained to the jathedar how Jagjit was brainwashed to go against the wishes of the family and not only embrace Islam but also marry a Muslim boy Mohammad Hassan.
The issue came to light after Kaur’s family members lodged a police complaint against Hassan and others for allegedly abducting Kaur, converting her to Islam and marrying a Muslim boy. This happened after a video of the girl marrying Hassan went viral on August 29, 2019. However in the video, Kaur was heard saying that she was 19 years of age and was marrying Hassan on her own will.
Marrying of a Sikh girl with a Muslim boy brought the two communities on the brink of clash which saw storming of
Gurdwara Nankana Sahib by Hassan’s brother
Imran on January 3. Imran who was accompanied by a group of local Muslims threatened to wipe out the Sikhs from Nankana Sahib and change the name of the holy city to Ghulam-e-Mustafa.
Presently Kaur was living in Dar-ul-Aman in
Lahore.
Sources informed that jathedar held discussions with the family members of Kaur for about half an hour .
Earlier, former president of Pakistan Sikh gurdwara parbandhak committee (PSGPC) had informed TOI that Sikhs of Peshawar and family members of Jagjit Kaur wanted to meet the visiting jathedar, however during his visit to
Gurdwara Panja Sahib, the Peshawar Sikhs delegation didn't come .
