Vadodara: A mob of 200 to 300 persons was booked for rioting and other offences as they vandalized as a traffic police cabin and got into a melee with policemen following a fatal accident at Susen circle in Tarsali on Vadsar road on Wednesday morning.
According to police, as a dumping truck ran over Bansi Surti (65) on Wednesday morning, a large group of people had blocked the road and had started thrashing the truck driver. When the traffic assistant sub-inspector Ashok Ramanbhai intervened and locked up the driver in the police cabin to save him from public wrath, the cabin was vandalized. The traffic cop called for more police as the mob swelled.
Even as more number of policemen reached the spot, the agitators got into melee with an inspector and even hurt a lok rakshak dal personnel. The traffic cop stated in his complaint that the mob even made attempts to torch the truck but when they were stopped, some persons pelted stones and damaged its windshield. An unidentified man also showed cash at cops and asked if they wanted more money, the complaint stated.
Later, as senior police officials and additional force reached, the crowd was dispersed and the road was cleared for traffic. An offence of rioting, deterring public servant from performing duty and criminal intimidation was registered. Police said that two persons – Jayesh Darji and Ajay Patel – have been identified from the mob.
Surti, a resident of Makarpura, was mowed down by the truck when he was on his way to his brother’s home near Nava Bazaar.
