KANPUR: Two lovers, who were about to get married on Wednesday, allegedly attempted
suicide by consuming poison, police said.
The man tried to end life on Tuesday after which the
woman also consumed poison on Thursday evening.
Police said they were yet to ascertain why the
couple took the extreme step.
They both are undergoing treatment at LLR hospital where their condition is stated to be critical.
Both of them were found unconscious in their respective houses.
According to police, the 23-year-old woman of Harsh Nagar locality, and 25-year-old man of Kamla Tower were having an affair. “The two came in contact through Facebook and developed an affair. Thereafter, they decided to get married and apprised their parents about their decision,” a police officer said.
Subsequently, the two got engaged in April last year. Later, when the youth and his family members allegedly demanded dowry, the girl’s family lodged an FIR against the youth and his family following which the marriage was called off. However, following intervention of elders from both the sides, the matter was solved and the two sides decided to solemnise the marriage in court on February 19.
“However, on Wednesday, it came to fore that the youth had attempted suicide by consuming poison in his house on Tuesday and was undergoing treatment at Lala Lajpat Rai hospital.
The girl went to meet him in the hospital on Thursday evening and consumed poison after returning home.
Inspector, Pheelkhana, Satish Chandra said prima facie it appeared that they had an argument before attempting suicide, but the exact reason would only be ascertained after they give their statement to police on regaining consciousness.
Further investigations are on in this connection, the inspector said.
