We have completed one hour of the second session and India, though having picked up one wicket in the last hour, are not in any better position in the match. Blundell and Williamson have added 37 runs for this wicket already. New Zealand getting into a strong position with the batting essay too.
Time for spin. Ashwin is brought on for the first time in the 22nd over. And Williamson finds the gap off his bowling too. The Kiwi skipper is looking good. He was out of most of the recent ODI series with an injury. He has returned looking to be in supreme touch in the Test series. NZ 60/1 after 22 overs
Classy shot from Williamson. Crunched through the off side for four. The last ball of the over is also crunched through the covers by Williamson. Runs starting to come more easily now. The Sun is out in full glory now, the pitch has seemed to flatten out and nothing is going India's way at the moment. Maybe time to bring on Ashwin to try and force something different. NZ 53/1 after 20 overs
Tom Blundell gives Shami the aggressive treatment again. Another short ball. Again Blundell picks up the length early and smashes it on the leg side. Backs it up with a very good leave. Blundell seems to have settled in now after taking 18 balls to get off the mark. With the score inching up to 50, India need another wicket here. This partnership is threatening to bring the difference in runs between the sides to double digits. NZ 44/1 after 19 overs
Bumrah getting into speeds of 140kph more frequently in that over. Williamson offers textbook defensive strokes to counter that. The Kiwi skipper has looked good in the early part of his knock. He has recovered from receiving that blow on his hands from the Ishant bouncer well. NZ 37/1 after 18 overs
Williamson punches Shami for four down to deep backward point. Shami is not happy with something as can be seen from his gesticulations but Williamson played a great shot there. Powerful punch with his feet in the air. Just that one scoring shot in that over. NZ 36/1 after 17 overs
Bumrah bowls a good first ovet to start off his second spell. Interesting to see when Ashwin will be brought on. Ajaz Patel got decent turn and bounce in the one over he was bowled today by New Zealand. Ashwin, who is a much bigger turner of the ball, might have something to say on that. NZ 32/1 after 16 overs
Blundell offers the full face off the bat consistently to Ishant. No runs for the last 10 balls. Blundell breaks the sequence with a strong drive. Ishant faltered on the length. That was too overpitched. Three runs taken. Ishant bowls one down the leg side and Williamson also almost gets a nick on it. Like Ishant had got Latham out. The first 15 overs of the innings are done, and while New Zealand have not been allowed to get away with it, the Indian bowlers have not got their teeth in either. Latham the only wicket to fall, and that had some element of luck in it. Jasprit Bumrah is brought back into the attack in the 16th over. He replaces Shami.
New Zealand's openers were looking to play a little more aggressively after the Lunch break but the wicket of Latham has put the brakes on the scoring a bit. Just 1 run has been scored since then. But then Williamson gets off the mark with a push down the off side for a couple of runs. Shami steaming in.
New Zealand hasn't had a 50+ opening partnership against India at home since 1994. The last opening pair with a 50+ stand was Bryan Young & Blair Hartland in Hamilton in March 1994, which was Kapil Dev's last Test appearance. Blundell and Latham cannot break that jinx either. Ishant and Shami continue their partnership with the ball after the break. NZ 27/1 after 12 overs
Williamson, who took a blow on the gloves from Ishant, is still struggling with it. Looks to be in some discomfort about his bottom hand. The physio is out to take a look at it. The skipper seen wrapping some tape around his fingers between overs. NZ 26/1 after 11 overs
Kane Williamson comes in at No.3. And gets a snorter from Ishant first ball. Grat short delivery. Williamson plays at it awkwardly. Ball lands short of the fielder and trickles harmlessly to him. Ishant is looking to be breathing fire at the moment. India looking much more likely to pick up wickets.
Breakthrough! Ishant gets the wicket! Tom Latham is caught behind. Ishant had strayed down the leg side. He gets a lucky break. Latham gets a tickle onto that ball as it goes through to the keeper. He would have wanted to play a leg glance but was a little too delicate with the touch. NZ 26/1 after 10.2 overs
Shami bowls a short ball. Blundell picks up the length early and pulls Shami with brute force. An attacking shot. Shows that New Zealand are looking to play with more intent after the break. Shami's over had five dot balls and that four. NZ 26/0 after 10 overs
Ishant Sharma makes a good comeback in the over after the boundary. Gets one to go through the gate of the batsman. Shami to bowl the 10th over. NZ 22/0 after 9 overs
Ishant Sharma takes the ball for India fter Lunch. Shami presumably will share the ball with him. Ishant looked the most dangerous in the first session. Shami also got an edge off Blundell in his one over. Blundell gets a four off Ishant through the covers with a drive off the third ball. And New Zealand are off!
The hosts are 148 runs away from India as we begin the second session of Day 2. First ball in 5 minutes. The India fielders are back on the field. Blundell and Latham to head out soon. India need to pick up a few quick wickets after the Lunch break. This session could decide if India can stay in touch of the match. Latham and Blundell did enough to take New Zealand to Lunch without any loss of wickets. If they can go till Tea without much loss, they will have taken complete command of the game.
The bails are off after that Shami over. New Zealand go into the break without any damage sustained. 17/0 after 8 overs the score after the first session on Day 1. New Zealand have continued their dominance in the match in the first session of the match. Ishant Sharma has looked to be the most troublesome Indian bowler so far. Play to resume in 40 minutes.
Mohammed Shami brought on to bowl one over before the Lunch break. There might be time for one more over after this, which Ishant will bowl if there is time. And Shami is bowling with fire! The second ball takes an outside edge and goes for a four above the slip cordon. Blundell thought he had hit it on the leg side. Lucky for New Zealand.
India go for an lbw review. Bumrah the bowler. Blundell the batsman. And there is a HUGE inside edge off the bat before that strike the pad. That is clear as crystal. The third umpire does not need too much time with that. Not out decision that remains. Blundell then gets off the mark with a quick single. Roars around the stadium for the local boy. NZ 12/0 after 7 overs
Latham again flicks Bumrah into the gip on the leg side and the batsmen scamper through for three runs. That is an area that has brought a lot of runs for Latham early on. Most of them have come against Bumrah.
Another maiden over from Ishant. Blundell leaves most of whatever Ishant throws at him alone. Gets an inside edge on to his pads once. No runs off that over. NZ 8/0 after 6 overs
Latham gets a couple of runs on the leg side with a tuck off Bumrah. And then there's an action replay of that in the last ball of the over. Bumrah has also gone to an around the wicket angle for latham. There is a good battle going on at the moment between India's new ball pair and New Zealand's opening pair. Blundell and Latham have done decently well to not go at the balls outside the off stump. NZ 8/0 after 5 overs
Ishant gets an edge off Latham with his angle. That lands just short of second slip. Ishant's angle around the wicket is giving Latham, the left hander, a lot of trouble early on. Latham gets a single on the leg side as Ishant strays on his legs.
Excellent over from Bumrah. Gets Blundell into two minds with his movement in the air. Just one scoring shot in the first three overs. NZ 3/0 after 3 overs
After a long delay with the sightscreen, Ishant beats Latham between bat and body with the last ball of the over. That's a maiden. Ishant starts off with a maiden. Bumrah back to bowl the 3rd over. NZ 3/0 after 2 overs

Bumrah starts off the bowling innings for India Tom Latham and Tom Blundell open the innings. Latham gets three runs with a push. You have to run these well in New Zealand, given the big sizes of the grounds. NZ 3/0 after 1 over
We could have as many as 10 overs before the Lunch break. Time for a good new ball pace spell. Ishant Sharma shares the new ball with Bumrah.
The home team's first innings will begin shortly. Southee gives a curt interview on his way into the dressing room. He was seen expressing a bit of anger after Shami's numerous let-offs in the field a little while ago.
Shami's luck finally deserts him. India are all out for 165. Shami's 20-ball 21 has given India some impetus at the end of their innings, but this is a disappointing total. They managed to last just one hour on Day 2 after having played two sessions on Day 1. The toss New Zealand won yesterday seems to have paid off.
Jamieson gets his 4th. Ishant Sharma cannot contend with his bounce. Gets an outside edge and BJ Watling claims another catch. Ishant Sharma goes for 5. India 165/9 after 67.3 overs. Bumrah the last man to come in to join the belligerent Shami. India have one last wicket remaining as we finish the first hour of the day. Drinks are taken.
Southee bowls the 67th over. Couple of balls wide of off stump. Shami then pulls Southee for a four. His third four! Shami gives charge off the next ball as well. That also lands just out of reach of the fielder. That shot had no timing but Shami continues living his charmed life. And Shami has a miraculous escape off the last ball of the over too. Ends with a single as the ball lands in no man's land again. A little bit of anger from Southee. Southee has bowled a long spell early on Day 2. That was his 20th over of the match. IND 164/8 after 67 overs
Jamieson is brought on as we approach the hour mark on Day 2. Shami and Ishant have stuck together in the middle long enough to frustrate the home team. A 17-ball 14 run partnership between them now. Jamieson was the most effective bowler on Day 1. Can he wrap up this innings? Can he pick up the remaining 2 wickets and take a fifer on Test debut? Jamieson bowls a debut to start off. Bowls a line outside off stump in his first over. IND 157/8 after 66 overs
Shami hits Southee down the ground for four to long on. Another boundary for him. Shami finding the middle of the bat will frustrate the New Zealand team. IND 157/8 after 65 overs
Shami does what he knows to do. Offers a slash shot. The ball flies just above gully. And oh the next ball is spooned up in the air. The ball goes straight up but is dropped by Williamson. Such a simple chance dropped. India's luck has been good in the last few overs. Shami is living a charmed life. India cross the 150-mark.
Shami gets some welcome runs on the leg side as Boult strays on his pads after a good first few balls of the over. Shami and Ishant run three. India could have started to think of reaching 250 or 300 if Rahane, Pant and Ashwin could have made it count today. They couldn't and it is India's tail that is now required to take India to a fighting total. IND 147/8 after 64 overs
Ishant Sharma is given caught behind. He goes for a review. And the decision is overturned to not out. Umpire thought there was an outside edge. There was not. The ball just nicked Ishant's pad. Shami has joined Ishant. IND 144/8 after 63 overs
Disaster for India. Rahane is gone. He is caught behind. What an anti climax. He had just begun to play some aggressive cricket. He then gets a bottom edge in an attempt to leave the ball. He goes for 46. Southee gets another wicket. His 3rd of the match. India on the mat at 143/8 after 62.3 overs
'See no one likes to sit outside but whatever your team needs on a particular game, you have got to accept that. I think acceptance is really important talking about that particular individual. Focus on controllables, keep working hard and improve as a cricket player.' - Rahane's words of advice for Pant before this Test. Today, he has been involved in Pant's run out.
Here's an unique stat: That run out of Pant was the first time in Rahane's Test career that he has been involved in a run out. In all of his career, neither has he been run out nor have his partners. Pant's run out, however, was a bad call and Rahane will have to take blame for this record being broken. Ishant Sharma made to look uncomfortble by Southee meanwhile. He survives but he is living dangerously. IND 141/7 after 61 overs
