ALLAHABAD: The 43-day
Magh Mela drew to a close with over 5.5 lakh devotees taking a dip in Sangam during the
Mahashivaratri snan on Friday at the Mela ground.
The sporadic rain on Friday did little to dampen the spirits of lakhs of devotees, who started thronging the Mela ground since early morning.
The air reverberated with chants of ‘har har Madadev’ as devotees celebrated Mahashivaratri. Friday’s snan was the last of the six snans of the Magh Mela, which started on January 10.
IG (Allahabad range) KP Singh said, “The last snan of 2020 Magh Mela Mahashivratri passed peacefully. Devotees from the city and neighbouring villages continued to pour in till 3pm. Police and paramilitary forces maintained a close watch.”
The strength of devotees only increased once it stopped raining in the afternoon.
At several spots, devotees tried to jump across the barricades put up on ghats to prevent accidents, however police did not allow them to enter into the deep water.
Mela police made continuous announcements urging devotees to not enter into the deep water.
Kaushambi resident
Ashok Kumar said, “The atmosphere was filled with spiritual energy. It’s an unforgettable experience and can be felt only if one attends the Magh Mela.”
Devotees also performed special pujas like the rudrabhishek on the banks of Ganga and temples on the occasion of Mahashivaratri.
A devotee from Reewa in Madhya Pradesh Mata Ram said, “I attended the last snan of Magh Mela along with my family and am surprised by the sheer number of devotees who turned up here.”
Taffic police had made elaborate arrangements for parking. The entry of vehicles was restricted on routes leading up to the Sangam. Traffic policemen were also deployed various locations on the Mela premises to guide visitors to parking lots.
At the same time, the arrangements did little to contain the traffic chaos in the rest of the city. The shobhya yatras (processions) organised on the occasion of Mahashivaratri choked several routes like Baihrana,
Arial Road, Old Yamuna Bank Road, Kydganj, Chowk and Katra.
Meanwhile, famous temples like the
Mankameshwar Temple,
Pahida Mahadeo and Someshwar Mahadeo Temples wore a crowded look as devotees rushed to offer prayers to Shiva on Mahashivtratri. Devotees also organised
Shiv baraat and trishool yatra in city on the occasion.
