Tamil Nadu said the Centre should carry out the National Population Register (
NPR) drive without asking the citizens to produce documents.
The state government had written to the Centre, insisting it to avoid asking information such as mother tongue, name of father, mother and spouse of any individual, place, and date of birth and Aadhaar, phone, voter identification or driving licence number while carrying out the NPR drive, said party coordinator O Panneerselvam and joint coordinator Edappadi K Palaniswami in a joint statement.
"Without asking for documents, the oral information given by the family members should be entered in NPR," said the AIADMK leaders.
They said provisions were created in the Citizenship Act 1955 in the BJP regime in 2003 to facilitate the implementation of NPR and disbursement of National Identity Card.
DMK was the ally of BJP then.
The first NPR exercise was carried out as part of the census during DMK’s ally Congress regime in 2010, they said and criticised DMK for indulging in misinformation campaign and instigating the people.
They further stated that the AIADMK government would not allow any harm to the minorities in the state and it would ever remain as “good friend and brother” to the people of Islam community.
