CHENNAI: The city police arrested four men on charges of holding captive an engineering student and attacking him for befriending a junior girl student at Nazarethpet on Thursday.
Those arrested were identified as Anbu, Ilangovan, Ilanchezhiyan alias Abi and Jebakumar. Police said the victim, S Nagoor Babu from Andhra Pradesh, studying biomedical engineering in a private college at Poonamallee and staying in a private hostel in Karambakkam, had befriended a second-year girl student from the same stream.
Investigating officials said the girl's ex-lover Anbu, who resided in the same neighbourhood as her, came to know that the girl had been spending time with Babu and warned him against it. Police said on Monday morning, Anbu came to the college with his friends on two bikes and asked Babu to step out for talks. His gang then took him to a house in Nazarethpet. They allegedly attacked him with pipes and held him captive, in a room. They abused him for being close to the girl and left him with a warning.
Based on a complaint from Babu's uncle, the four boys were arrested.
