Chennai artist to hold exhibition for the cause of rescued animals

Alamelu Annhamalai
CHENNAI: Alamelu Annhamalai has been visiting the Blue Cross of India (BCI) for the last one year. Touched by the plight of the animals and the work done by the organisation, the city-based artist is now conducting an exhibition cum sale of her paintings and half of the proceeds from the sale will go to the BCI.
The BCI has been rescuing and rehabilitating stray animals and birds in Chennai for over 56 years.
“Initially, I was quite scared of animals, so I went there to get over the fear. There, when I saw how many people are taking the time out to help animals in distress, I began wondering how, as an artist, I can do my bit to help,” says Alamelu. That’s how she came up with ‘Canvas for a Cause’, which will be held at Shakunthala Art Gallery, C P Art Centre, Alwarpet.
Alamelu works mainly with acrylics and mixed media. However, the subject matter of each body of her work determines the medium. The paintings are priced between Rs 500 and Rs 80,000 and are on a variety of themes. “Anyone who wants to help can ‘purchase with a purpose’ and take home a painting,” says Alamelu, who believes in using art to draw attention to a cause.
The exhibition will be inaugurated at 6pm on February 28. The exhibition and sale will be held from February 29 to March 2, from 10 am to 7 pm.
Since she is an ambidextrous visual artist, a live demo of Alamelu sketching with both hands simultaneously will be held at 5pm from February 29 to March 2.
