Soon, cuts on dividers to ease commuting woes

Allahabad: The district administration has decided to provide road cuts on dividers at 21 points across the city, especially at important public utility points, to facilitate commuters who have to cover long distances to reach their destinations.
TOI had raised the issue in October last year.
Many road dividers were constructed in the city as part of smart city project which run for long distances without any cuts or openings. As a result, the commuters either have to jump the dividers, or cover long distance and take a U-turn to reach their destination.
According to officials, the administration has decided to provide cuts at 21 points on different roads including MG road, Nawab Yusuf road, Stanley road, Thornhill road, Kutchery road, PD Tandon road, Master JH road, Prayag Street, Elgin road and Church lane road.
Mission manager of smart city (technical) Sanjeev Sinha said, “As per the norms of the Road Safety Act, commuters should be provided with the facility of zebra crossing. Soon, roads in the city will be provided with cuts and zebra crossings.”
MG Road in Civil Lines area has dividers but planners did not provide a cut and a zebra crossing at Civil Lines bus depot and several other public utility spots on the stretch.
Commuters and passengers on this specific place are more vulnerable because of the fact that it is not only a bus depot but adjacent to it is a mall and state-owned hotel which are frequented by large number of locals as well as people coming from other cities.
Amit Srivastava of Jhunsi said, “Who is asking for a broad opening in dividers? The authorities should at least think of passengers, especially women, for whom crossing the road is a tedious job.”
