GUWAHATI: Fearing a three-year ban after being expelled for cheating during the Class X board examination, a girl student from
Assam's Barpeta district has committed suicide by consuming pesticides.
The deceased, identified as Lipika Parbin, was a resident of Barbhitha-Padmapara village under Tarabari Police Station. She died in a Guwahati hospital on Tuesday.
Lipika was rebuked by her parents after she was expelled from the Bohori High School examination centre for allegedly adopting unfair means while taking the elective Arabic paper last Thursday. The following day, she consumed pesticides and was immediately rushed to a primary health centre at Chenga in Barpeta. But as her condition worsened, she was shifted to a private hospital in Guwahati on Saturday.
"Lipika could not bear the pain after getting expelled from the examination centre. After reaching home, she told us that she was not at fault. She was fearing a three-year ban," said Mohammad Latif, Lipika's father.
However, supervising officer of the examination centre, Sajida Khatun, told TOI, "The candidate was caught for cheating after almost one and half hour from the time of commencement of the paper. In her case, it was decided to punish her under 'time expel' rules. This means she was barred from answering the paper on that particular day only. In no way, she was going to be barred from taking the Class X exam for three years. She could have appeared in the remaining papers of the exam."
