AMRITSAR: Handing out punishment in a 16-year-old case of suicide by an Amritsar family due to harassment and extortion by police and their kin, a city court sentenced a former Punjab Police DIG and four relatives of the victims to rigorous imprisonment of eight years. A DSP was given four-year RI.
On October 30, 2004, Hardip Singh, his mother Jaswant Kaur, wife Romi and sons Ismeet and Sanmeet had committed suicide at their residence by consuming poison. Former DIG Kultar Singh was Amritsar SSP when the family allegedly committed suicide, blaming the cop for forcing them to take the extreme step. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 23,000 on Kultar and four relatives of Hardip.
