It is believed that St. Bernards, whose ancestors are mastiff, were brought to Switzerland from Rome during periods of war. During the 17th century, they were used to accompany monks at the Great Saint Bernard Hospice and Monastery in Switzerland in the winters. This giant breed of dogs made excellent companions for monks to travel through deep snow. They were also used to rescue travellers stuck in the snow.
