Justice is luxury accessible to rich: Uphaar fire tragedy petitioner after SC dismissed curative petitions

Supreme Court on February 20 dismissed the curative petitions filed by the victims of 1997 Uphaar Cinema fire tragedy case. A petitioner, Neelam Krishnamoorthy expressed her outrage against SC’s ruling. She said, “I think today’s verdict has shattered me as a mother. I had faith in this system. I waited for quarter of a century. CJI says don’t ask for instant justice, I waited for a quarter century and this is what I get. We are disappointed with the system. The court takes note of the death of a child in Shaheen Bagh. In Uphaar fire tragedy, 23 children died, and the youngest of them was only 30 days old. The Supreme Court has shown that justice is delivered only when there is public outrage, or when there is a pressure from powerful lobby. Justice is a luxury which is accessible to the rich and powerful in India.”
