CHANDIGARH: A year after the launch of Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-Kisan) scheme, over 22.40 lakh eligible land holding farmer families in Punjab have received at least one instalment of Rs 2,000 into their bank accounts through direct benefit transfer (DBT) system.
Over 23.75 lakh land holding farmer families have registered in Punjab to date under PM-Kisan, which is a fully centrally-funded scheme. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had unveiled the PM-Kisan scheme on February 24 last year at Gorakhpur. Under the direct income support scheme, eligible farmer families would receive Rs 6,000 per year in three equal instalments of Rs 2,000 each. As per the criteria, there should not be more than five acre land in total in the name of the claimant farmer, his wife and minor children.
Agriculture secretary Kahan Singh Pannu said verification of farmers, who have submitted their claims under the scheme, is in process through patwaris. “To date, we have not found any such claim where a farmer has made a fake claim,” said Pannu. Since the claimant farmers have given an undertaking, the state has every right to recover the amount and take action against fake claimants, he added.
As per the state government records, over 22.40 lakh eligible farmer families have received their first instalment under the scheme to date, over 21.59 lakh have got the second instalment and over 14.59 lakh their third instalment. The state government had made all the 3,500 cooperative societies across Punjab as nodal agencies for the claimant farmers to submit their self-declaration for the PM-Kisan scheme. Initially, the state government had received applications from farmers with self-declaration that in case a claimant farmer’s information is found incorrect at a later stage, the state government could recover the amount and initiate action against him.
Under the scheme, serving or retired employees of the government or its board and corporations are not eligible to apply. Similarly, income-tax payers and professionals like doctors and engineers, MPs, MLAs, mayors and holders of other constitutional posts are also not eligible under the scheme.
