‘Bandicoot’-maker Genrobotics wins Infosys Foundation award

Thiruvananthapuram: Tech entrepreneurs Vimal Govind M K, Rashid K and Nikhil N P, who developed manhole cleaning robotBandicoot’ with the aim of eliminating manual scavenging, won the Aarohan Social Innovation award instituted by Infosys Foundation, the philanthropic and CSR arm of Infosys.
The Arohan awards were established in 2018 to recognize and reward individuals, teams, and NGOs for creating innovative solutions to support the underprivileged in India, at scale. The gold award carries a purse of Rs 20 lakhs.
This year, Infosys Foundation identified winners across four award categories: healthcare, rural development, destitute care and sustainability. The winners were shortlisted from a pool of over 1,700 submissions and evaluated by a jury comprising Arvind Gupta, toy inventor and science expert, Anil Gupta, visiting faculty member, IIM Ahmedabad, Trilochan Sastry, former Dean, IIM Bangalore, GVV Sharma, faculty member of the department of electrical engineering, and coordinator, teaching learning centre, IIT Hyderabad, Sumit Virmani, chief marketing officer, Infosys and Sudha Murty, chairperson of Infosys Foundation, philanthropist and author.
The Genrobotics team won the award in the category of sustainability. Genrobotics CEO Vimal Govind M K said that the prize money will be utilized for research and development of Bandicoot.
Partha Pratim Das Mahapatra from Kolkata, who developed a non-invasive, non-contact robust hand-held portable device to measure human bilirubin, oxygen saturation, and hemoglobin levels, without drawing blood from the body, Binita S Tunga and Rashbehari Tunga from Bengaluru, who created a single device that detects mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria, chikungunya, and dengue in very early stages of infection, and TUMAAS (Foundation for Tuberculosis, Malnutrition and AIDS) from Mumbai, which is developing a point-of-care, user-friendly, cost-effective, and rapid test for diagnosis of TB through urine, won gold awards in healthcare. Ramalingam P L from Chennai, who created an affordable standing wheelchair that helps special children and individuals with spinal cord injury, won the award in destitute care.
