Local youth to be roped in for disaster management in Jharkhand: Minister Banna Gupta

RANCHI: Youth from villages will be roped in help the disaster management department in Jharkhand, informed minister Banna Gupta.
Talking to TOI exclusively, Banna Gupta, health minister who also holds the disaster management portfolio, said: “Youths living in rural parts of the state especially near water bodies, dams, rivers and are good swimmers will be trained and kept ready in time of crisis.” ,
He said: “These boys and girls will get employment at local level and in turn give boost to the disaster management team,” adding they will be available readily. The minister said this will be helpful in saving precious lives.
Banna said the state-level disaster management department will be overhauled so that it can help people in need. He said work in this direction is nearly 80% over. He said the department will report to the CM and second in command will be the minister concerned. Others in the panel who will ensure the smooth and day-today functioning will comprise of secretaries of various departments.
Banna said retired army personnel will be hired by the state disaster response force (SDRF). He expressed concern over the lighting–related deaths in the state, which annually accounts to around 250 as per reports. He said disaster management department has to look into this matter and find solution quickly before the 'kalbaishaki’ season starts.
He said efforts are on to develop a software-based solution which will pass on text message on mobiles about forthcoming lighting strikes in the area.
Meanwhile, reacting to a tweet the health minister immediately instructed Pakur deputy commissioner to help Ruksar Parveen, a six-year-old cancer affected girl child living in remote part of the district.
Sources said Ruksar complained of stomachache in December last year. Then her father took her to Kolkata for treatment, where she was diagnosed of cancer and doctors there instructed the parents to get the child operated, which involves large amount of money which the poor parents could not afford.
Taking note of all this the minister has asked the DC to give all possible help to the family.
