The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), has finally opened its account in Kolkata's Jadavpur University (JU), usually considered to be a den of leftists. In the recently conducted JU student elections, ABVP performed phenomenally in the Engineering Department, as expected, snatching away the second position from the formidable Students' Federation of India (SFI), the student organisation affiliated to the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

Preliminary vote-counting trends made it clear that the left-wing Democratic Students Federation (DSF) has bagged the most number of votes in the Engineering Department. However, ABVP has taken the second position, receiving more votes than SFI.

According to current election trends, the total number of votes in the Engineering Department is 1405. Among these, DSF has received 1167 votes. The ABVP has managed to bag 115 votes. Meanwhile, SFI has got only 70 votes. Therefore, ABVP has managed to one-up SFI and relegate it to the third position in the JU Engineering Department, right after contesting the polls for the first time.

Notably, the student wing of the saffron camp had decided to poll candidates for all student union posts this year. For the first time in the history of the university, ABVP had pitched candidates for all four posts of CP, GS, AGS (Day), and AGS (Evening) for the Arts and Engineering departments.

Apart from these organisations, the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), the student wing of the ruling Mamata Banerjee-led TMC, received 29 votes. 22 votes went to NOTA (None Of The Above).

On the other hand, union posts in the science department were once again claimed by WUTI, which had earlier won the science seats as well. The closest opponent was SFI.

The Jadavpur University student union polls were held yesterday. No disturbance was reported during the polls.
