CHANDIGARH: Panjab University (PU) has bagged the fifth position among Indian universities and 166th in the world in the Times Higher Education (THE) Emerging Economies University Rankings 2020 released on Wednesday.
According to THE, PU has 19,912 students and the ratio of students per staff is 23.4. There are 1% international students and the ratio of females to males is 49.51.

The universities were rated on teaching, research, industry income, international outlook and citation.
PU has shown improvement in research, scoring a rank of 14.4 from 11 in 2019. Interestingly, the university improved its score by not securing any major project last year. However, the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of PU for the first time set up a portal in which all the faculty members put their research work and are issued an ID called ORCID, said Dr Ashish Jain, director, IQAC. He said all research papers are traced through this portal, a move that helped them secure a better rank. He said special drives were organised for faculty members to make them understand how to use the portal.
The university ranked 56.6th under citation, which was 54.5 in 2019. He said as the publications are on the portal, it was easy to showcase them in the world market.
Under the teaching category, PU scored 27th rank, which was 26.9 in 2019. Giving reasons for improvement in this parameter, Jain said guest teachers were considered as equivalent to full-time in the rankings.
Under the industry income category, the university scored 34.9th rank against 34 in 2019. In international outlook category, there was little improvement as PU was ranked 16.5 against 16
last year.
Professor Raj Kumar, vice-chancellor, said he is happy that the university has fared well in the rankings. “It is heartening to see that PU is ranked among the top five universities in the country. PU has surged ahead of a majority of other Indian universities who are given the tag of institutes of eminence. If we are able to maintain this pace, I am sure we will soon be leading the list of universities in the country,” he said.
