PUNE: The Mundhwa police on Tuesday booked a quack who was operating a clinic from his residence at Keshavnagar here without any proper medical degree or certificate.
Medical officer Dinesh Bhende from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has lodged an FIR under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Maharashtra Medical Practitioners Act.
Bhende told TOI, “The PMC’s health department had recently received a complaint application from an alert citizen to verify the medical degree or certificate of a 66-year-old man because he was illegally running the clinic. We then conducted an inquiry and visited the quack’s clinic and asked him to furnish documents pertaining to his medical degree or certificate. He then submitted some documents stating that he was a member of a private medical association outside Maharashtra. An inquiry revealed that he was not holding a degree in medicine. His name was not registered with the Maharashtra medical council.”
“We then took a call to lodge an FIR against the quack after seeking opinion from the PMC’s legal department,” he said. He added that Keshavnagar earlier came under the gram panchayat and it was now being merged into the PMC limits.
Sub inspector Rajendra Ghate from Mundhwa police said, “We had also received a complaint application against the quack from the public for verifying his credentials. Investigations have revealed that the suspect was working as a nursing assistant in the army. After he retired from service, he started running clinic from his residence and started treating patients since 2014.”
Ghatge said, “After the quack failed to furnish his medical degree or certificate to the civic body an FIR was registered. The quack has furnished an identity card to show that he was registered with a private medical association but investigations have revealed that he was not authoritsed to run clinic because he was not a doctor.”
The quack will be arrested at the earliest, he added.
