PUNE: Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has changed the Shanipar-Niljyoti bus route from Tuesday onwards due to hooliganism in Niljyoti area of Janwadi.

The decision has come after two youths were caught in the CCTV camera of PMPML bus route number 59 Shanipar-Niljyoti thrashing the conductor. The incident took place on February 14.

A case was registered with Chatuhshrungi police station regarding the same. The police have been unable to trace the youths even four days after the incident. The CCTV footage has gone viral on social media platforms.

As per information, on February 14 at around 6 pm, the bus stopped near Janwadi bus stop. Conductor Kailash Randive and driver Mahadev Shinde were inside the bus when two youths on a motorbike entered the bus and started thrashing Randive. The bus, reportedly, had grazed the motorbike due to which the youths chased the bus and assaulted Randive. Randive shouted for help and tried to nab them but they both fled.

According to PMPML officials, several such incidents take place on this route. After taking it seriously, the PMPML administration has decided to alter the route. The buses will run on the new route between Shanipar to Janwadi (Mafco Company) from Tuesday.

The commuter groups, however, are not happy with the PMPML’s response.

“It’s tragic that such an assault happened on PMPML staff. It’s a sad commentary on the law and order situation in the city. However, to suspend service and make the passengers suffer is not the right response. What PMPML could have done instead is approach the police commissioner and seek protection from such elements and seek action against those who indulged in the assault. Suspension of service is unfortunate,” said Sanjay Shitole of PMP Pravasi Manch.
