Is this the most dangerous road in Australia? Huge boulders crash to the ground from the top of a tall cliff

  • Video footage shows boulders smash into a road in the Gold Coast's hinterland
  • The road, which connects to Binna Burra, has been shut to public amid danger
  • Area was ravaged by a fire in September and Binna Burra Lodge was destroyed

Boulders have smashed onto the road in the Gold Coast hinterland as the community attempts to rebuild in the wake of devastating bushfires.

Video footage from December and obtained by Nine News shows the debris roll from the edge of the cliff before crashing into the one-lane road.

A concrete barrier separating the road and the cliff fell victim to the falling rock, as dust began to cover the view.

The road, which connects to Binna Burra, has been shut to the public amid the danger and is undergoing construction.

The area was ravaged by a fire in September and the heritage-listed Binna Burra Lodge was destroyed.

Eight homes and four other commercial structures in the Gold Coast hinterland areas of Sarabah and Canungra were also gutted by the blaze.

The 18-day fire event, which began on September 6, burned through about 6,000 hectares of the hinterland.

But the fire-ravaged community is now facing more troubles after being hit by record-breaking rain.

The deluge has meant cliffs are even less stable and has pushed back the Binna Burra Lodge's re-opening date.

Chairman Steve Noakes told the ABC:'Yes it's been delayed big time, sadly.'

'The road repairs were on track quite well in January but Easter is now a very ambitious target, given the heavy rain and the extra work that's required to secure the cliff faces above and below the single access road in and out of Binna Burra.'

'We are now looking at reopening in the second half of the year.'
