Aligning with the parents’ demand, schools are competing with each other to give birth to the excellent students but where they lack is an overall development of an individual to face the future. Discussing the same, a panel comprising of Mamta Saikia, CEO of Bharti Foundation, Uttara Singh, Principal of The Shriram Millenium School, Noida, Manju Gupta, Principal of Kothari International School, Noida, Jasjit Kaur Sood, Principal, OPS Vidya Mandir Karnal and Harinder Chhabra, Director of The Infinity School came together to shed some light on the issue.
Many have been talking about Academic results versus Holistic development but the panel admitted they are inter-related. In a way, academic results are a part of holistic development, says Uttara. On the similar lines, Sood said, “Academic results is a subset of holistic development.”
To facilitate this development, The Shriram Millenium School is focusing on Social and Adversity quotient (SQ and AQ) in her school. It is helping the students to prepare for future and handle situations.
Whereas to various schools in India, Gupta suggests them to change according to the technological advancements. As they work towards the skill development in students which is helping them to change their thought process. She also emphasised on getting out of traditional type of schooling.
Meanwhile, Sood backed the fact that it is principal’s job to keep on empowering development both in teachers and students.
In the race of education and scoring the perfect score academically, students were missing out on the development. On the other hand, Indian schools are struggling to convince parents about the importance of holistic development. Chhabra shares his experience as a parent where he has been explained and shown results of implications of holistic development in his child’s school. It has convinced him to support the approach as it leads to better outcomes.
Saikia concluded the discussion at BW Education presents School Leaders Conclave on 19th February 2020, as she said, “A child not only experiences school but the society as it defines their growth in a holistic manner.”
