A Californian busker dressed as a pencil has been assaulted after a bystander used grabbed his ukulele and used it to attack him.

Matt Eberhart was performing a parody of 'I Will Survive' in Adelaide's Rundle Mall when he was targeted at noon on Wednesday.

Video footage showed a man pick up the Fringe performer's instrument from its case and begin to walk towards him.

The attacker then attempted to hit the man with the mini-guitar before landing a blow to the performer's head.

Witnesses then jumped on the man and held him down until police arrived. 

Mr Eberhart held a cloth to his head and asked bystanders to give him money as he'll 'need a new ukulele', according to the Advertiser

The busker was taken to hospital for treatment of a head wound.

'It is one thing to punch a guy, it is another thing to take his stuff and hit him with it,' he told 7 NEWS.

'If you want to fight me, fight me with your fists.

Passersby then jumped on the accused and held him down until police arrived

'Even then - I am a lover not a fighter. I don't like to fight.' 

A 29-year-old man was arrested.

He is expected to be charge with property damage, theft, possessing a controlled drug and assault.
