BATHINDA: Two cousins fired at each other during a cricket tournament at Thammangarh village in Bathinda on Monday, resulting into the death of one of them.
Police said 32-year-old Congress activist Taranpal Singh received a bullet injury in his chest and died whereas his cousin Gurjit Singh was hit in hand and fled from the scene. They had a land dispute going on for some time.
Taranpal had filed nomination papers from Maur assembly constituency as the Trinamool Congress candidate in January 2017. Three days before polling, he had withdrawn from the contest though his name figured on ballot papers, and joined the Congress.
Gurjit and Taranpal were both present at the tournament in the village on Monday afternoon and got into an altercation. People present there tried to get them away from each other but before anybody could do anything both pulled their weapon and fired at each other, said an eyewitness. He said it looked a scene from some Hollywood movie as they stood facing each other and pulled the trigger at the same time. Gurjit's aimed proved to be true and a bullet hit Taranpal in their chest and he collapsed. Gurjit got hit in hand.
Taranpal was taken to hospital at Maur where he was declared brought dead, whereas Gurjit is on the run.
