ALLAHABAD: The
Allahabad high court on Monday adjourned the hearing till March 18 on a PIL petition filed against alleged police atrocities during anti-CAA protests in the state in December last year.
Hearing a bunch of petitions, a division bench comprising Chief Justice
Govind Mathur and Justice Siddhartha Verma asked the petitioners and the state government to file their respective affidavits and relevant documents.
Earlier, at one stage, the court directed the state government to file affidavit and inform it about the FIRs/complaints filed by groups or organisations alleging police atrocities on protestors during anti-CAA protests.
Appearing on behalf of the state government, additional advocate general
Manish Goel on Monday produced report regarding the incidents and informed the court that during protests on December 20-21, a total of 22 people had died and 83 sustained injuries. At least 45 police personnnel also received injuries, he said, adding that FIRs had been lodged against 883 people for rioting and damage to public property.
“Out of these, 561 people have been granted bail. Out of remaining 332, bail applications of 111 people are pending in different courts. Total 10 complaints were received against police which are being examined,” he said.
Petitioners’ counsel SFA Naqvi alleged excessive force was used by police which led to several deaths and injuries to many others. “Police action was unjustified and in violation of fundamental rights of protestors,” he added
