MUMBAI: Maharashtra chief minister
Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday clarified that both Elgar Parishad and Koregaoon-Bhima violence cases are different.
"Koregaon-Bhima case will not be transferred to the Centre and we will not let injustice happen to
Dalit community," Thackeray asserted.
Thackeray was talking to media at Sindhudurg in
Konkan region on Tuesday. The state government had recently decided to hand over the probe related to Elgar Parishad to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the central agency.
"Koregaon-Bhima violance case is related to Dalit community and at any cost I will not hand over the Koregaon-Bhima case to the Centre. Hence, let me clear and there should not be any confusion over the Koregaon-Bhima violance and Elgar Parishad case," said Thackeray.
The event to mark 200th anniversary of the Koregaon-Bhima battle in Pune district, in which forces of the East India Company defeated Peshwa's army, was marred by incidents of violence on January 1, 2018. During the violence, one person from Maratha community got killed. Following the incident, the erstwhile government had appointed a two-member commission to probe
Koregaon-Bhima violence in February 2018. So far, the commission has examined only 29 witnesses in Mumbai and Pune hearing, out of which seven are still underway.
The state has give the last two months extension to the commission and the tenure of the commission will get expired in March 2020 while almost 50% work yet to be completed.
