LUCKNOW: The city will soon have more parks with facilities like open-air gym, kids’ zone, selfie points and cycle tracks. Lucknow Development Authority has decided to renovate and upgrade 311 existing parks under its jurisdiction in different parts of the state capital.
The decision was taken on the directions of Lucknow divisional commissioner Mukesh Meshram on Monday. According to LDA officials, of the 311 parks under their jurisdiction, 27 will be fully renovated. Repair work will be carried out in the remaining 284 parks. The estimated cost for the project is Rs 5 crore. At present, most of the prominent parks in the city are in a dilapidated condition. For instance, most gym equipment and swings installed at Lohia Park in Gomtinagar are broken, proving to be dangerous for kids. The condition of small parks in several localities and housing colonies is no different. Several residents of Gomtinagar, Nishatganj, New Hyderabad and Jankipuram complain that most benches in parks are broken and stray dogs are a common feature there.
In a survey recently conducted by the development authority, it was found that around 45% of the parks under LDA are in pathetic shape, resulting in a sharp decline in the number of tickets sold. While the maximum number of parks are in Gomtinagar (87), Jankipuram is second with 62 parks.
According to the action plan prepared by LDA, each park will have services like seating arrangements, pathways, open air gym, complaint centre, kids’ zone, paintings, sculptures and dustbins. To remove irregularities and avoid delays, members of the project committee divisional commissioner Mukesh Meshram, LDA vice-chairman Shiwa Kant Dwivedi, LDA garden in charge SP Sisodiya and other officials will have weekly meetings to track its project.
