MANGALURU: The sixth additional district and sessions court judge Sayeedunnisa on Monday sentenced Cyanide Mohan to life imprisonment for the murder of a woman from Kasaragod. This is the 19th case that in which he is being held guilty.
Public prosecutor Jayarama Shetty told TOI that the 23-year-old victim, who rolled beedis for a livelihood, had gone missing from her house on January 3, 2006. The two met at a wedding and he introduced himself as Mohan Kumar, a teacher from Vittal.
Later, Mohan visited the victim’s house and evinced interest in marrying her. She told her family that she was going for a picnic and left home on January 3, 2006. Both travelled to Mysuru and spent the night at a lodge. The woman came wearing her jewellery as advised by Mohan.
Like in all other cases, after having sex with the victim, the next day (January 4), he told her they would be going to a temple for puja. He told her to leave the gold in the hotel room as advised by a priest. Mohan then took her to the KSRTC bus stand where he gave her a tablet laced with cyanide, saying it’s a contraceptive pill. He then asked her to go to the toilet in the bus stand and take it.
Police constable Basavaraj from Lashkar police station found her lying in the toilet. She was declared brought dead at the hospital.
The connect to Mohan was made when he was arrested in another case in October 2009. Based on the woman’s father, Lashkar police converted the case into a murder. The court examined 48 witnesses and verified 70 documents.
Mohan has been awarded life sentence and fined Rs 25,000 under IPC Section 302 (murder).
Meanwhile, he also has been sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) and penalty of Rs 5,000 under IPC Section 366 (kidnapping), one year of RI under Section 417 (cheating), seven years of RI and penalty of Rs 5,000 under Section 376 (rape), 10 years and Rs 5,000 under Section 328 (Causing hurt by means of poison), five years and Rs 5,000 under Section 392 (robbery), 10 years and Rs 5,000 under Section 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) and seven years and Rs 5,000 under Section 201 (causing disappearance of evidence).
