Vadodara: Sanitation workers of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) held demonstrations at the Khanderao Market headquarters of the civic body demanding that they should be given regular appointments. The workers stayed put in the compound outside the office till late on Monday night.
A large majority of sanitation workers of the civic body are on temporary employment. These include those on 11-month contracts and those being paid based on the days of work allocated to them.
Sanitation workers have been demanding since several years that they should be given regular employment. The VMC has been dodging the issue and has been making promises to consider their demands without any concrete steps being taken.
The top brass of the VMC officials met the representatives of the workers late in the evening. The civic body sought time of a month to resolve the issue. Not in a mood to take any more promises, the sanitation workers turned down the offer. They said that they had given enough time regarding their demands and wanted the VMC to come up with a circular for employment of workers.
With the talks reaching a stalemate, the representatives declared that they would continue the protest in the night too.
