VARANASI: The Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel at Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction in Chandauli district caught two carriers of arms smuggling gang and recovered 24
pistols and 48 magazines from them on Sunday while Ballia police arrested two arms smugglers with country-made revolvers on Monday.
The arrested carriers were produced before Chandauli court on Monday and sent to jail.
Inspector GRP DDU Junction, R K Singh said, “Our team noticed two suspicious youths with three heavy backpacks on platform 2/3 during routine checking drive on Sunday afternoon. On checking of their bags, 24 pistols and 48 magazines were found.”
The two, identified as Jamaluddin and Saleem, residents of Bokaro, revealed during interrogation that they were involved in coal trade but had been recently called by a gang of arms smugglers to Hazaribagh for delivery of a consignment to someone in Moradabad, said Singth. After reaching DDU Junction, they were waiting to borad a train to Moradabad.
The pistols, with ‘Made in US’ markings, but suspected to be country-made, were being sent to Moradabad from Hazaribagh in Jharkhand. The accused revealed that the gang earns a profit of Rs 35,000 on sale of each pistol. Teams of IB and anti-terror squad also interrogated the carriers while a GRP team was sent to Hazaribagh and Bokaro to trace kingpin of the gang.
Singh said it was the biggest haul of arms consignment and shared that his team his team had seized 69 pistols between 2017 and 2019. The arms smuggling gangs in Bihar and Jharkhand procure a pistol for Rs 15,000 and sell it for Rs 50,000 in west UP and Delhi, earning a profit of over Rs 35,000, he said.
Meanwhile, in Ballia, police busted an arms manufacturing unit in Ajaur village in Khejuri police station area and caught two arms manufacturers and smugglers, Santosh Kumar Singh and Chhotelal. Two country-made revolvers, barrels, other parts and equipment for making arms and live cartridges were also recovered. Inspector Khejuri, Pradeep Kumar Chawdhary said the accused confessed their involvment in manufacturing and smuggling arms.
