Matru Sewa Sangh (MSS) Mahal branch organized paediatric surgical operative workshop as part of its
Bal Shalyakriya Mission (BSM) from January 27 to 31. City based organizations Balmitra Foundation, GSB Sabha and Shanta Spine Centre along with Peedh Parai International from Houstan, Texas (USA) joined hands to make this workshop a success.
Total 174 children with major surgical problems of wide spectrum of complexities of various organ system (liver, food pipe, spine, intestine, kidney, lungs and diaphragm) got the benefit of cutting-edge technology and expertise during this camp.
More than 350 persons, including children and their family members, received nutritious meals, breakfast and lunch made and served by chef Rajesh Bhat and team of GSB Sabha.
This mission also received support from Dr Sajal Mitra, dean of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), and Dr Naresh Tirpud, HoD, anesthesia, GMCH. Dr Tirpude paid a visit during the mission to ensure smooth conduct of the procedures. They also assured support and involvement of their team in future missions. Dr Rajendra Saoji and his team of Balmitra Foundation coordinated the entire project.
Dr BP Khobragade, senior consultant paediatrician and his team, looked after pre-operative assessment and post-operative care of all patients. Nursing staff and students of MSS Mahal branch nursing institute provided care under the guidance of Husain and Klera Patla.
Satish Agale and Liladhar Damaye of Balmitra Foundation did a commendable job with their central sterilization unit and operation room assistance to minimize the infection. Supply of drugs and disposable was maintained by Bombay Medical Store, Sitabuldi.
Educational session during this mission involved workshop and lectures for nursing students and staff on ‘Stoma care (colostomy, ileostomy, gastrostomy, ureterostomy) by an expert from Germany, Dr Ilka Gilbert. PowerPoint presentation regarding importance of hygiene and cleanliness, nutrition to parents was provided by Dr VS Dani and Dr Jayshree Pendharkar. They also distributed locally made high protein and calorie packets to the kids.
Bal Shalyakriya Mission (BSM 2020) was inaugurated by retired air marshal and vice chief of Indian Air Force Shirish Deo. Sonali Deshpande, chairperson of Persistent Foundation, was the chief guest. President of MSS Mahal branch Kanchan Gadkari, chief medical officer at MSS Dr Chhaya Chourasia, and chairman of Peedh Parai International Dr Ashwin Pimpalwar also addressed the gathering.
Jitendra Nayak, secretary of GSB Sabha, Nagpur, gave detail account of Bal Shalyakriya Mission. Secretary of MSS Mahal Vaidehi Bhate proposed a vote of thanks and Dr Snehal Satone conducted the inaugural function.
Certificates, mementoes, and sweets were distributed to all the participants on the concluding day. Treasurer of MSS Mahal Irawati Dani said this service must continue throughout the year and good paediatric surgical services should start on regular basis. She also assured all possible help.
