Nagpur: ‘Ek mai aur ek tu.. love, intimacy and beyond’, a special Valentine’s Day programme organized by the Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (ACPN), Nagpur, at Laburnum Hall, Chitnavis Centre, on Sunday evening highlighted the issues of social taboos and stigmas on relationships.
“Given the era of modernization, people often confuse attraction with love,” said keynote speaker, Dr Hemant Mittal, a consulting psychiatrist, while delivering his speech on the topic —‘Power and responsibility of love’.
“The power of love is a thought of making it last. If there’s direction and focus, love will have a long run. If two people do not find this thought uplifting enough, then it is clearly not love, but attraction,” said Mittal.
He clarified where love actually comes from and stated that it’s an emotion that gets generated emotionally due to external inputs. He also described the direction of love as an attraction formed in one’s mind, but with logic.
According to Mittal, most relationships fail because they do not advance in a stage-wise manner.
Guest speaker, Dr Manjushree Sardeshpande, HOD of the English department from RS Mundle College, began with a sonnet by William Shakespeare.
“True love is not easy to find,” she said, adding, “The purest form of love is a mother’s love.”
She spoke about the past, present and future of love relationships and how changes are taking place from generation to generation. “Love is selfless. The one who only thinks about others displays genuine and selfless love. The current generation is confused and highly mistaken about what real love is all about. Most youngsters do not think about their partners and this ruins their relationship.”
In the group discussion, coordinator Dr Chetan Rewatkar questioned the panellists — Mittal, Sardeshpande, Shruti Rathi, a student and Palash Makadwar, an entrepreneur — on subjects like the difference between the past and current generation, basic difference between ‘crush’ and ‘love’ and love marriages.
The interaction between the audience and the panellists was lively, interesting and informative.
