KOLKATA: In an effort to rationalize the teacher student ration in schools, the school education department will carry out an online survey of schools to find out the number of teachers and students in the schools. Replying to a query in the assembly, education minister Partha Chatterjee said that this will be first step so that the department can appoint teachers according to the strength of the students.

Though assuring that no school will be closed because of the low students turn-out, the minister said, "One lakh teachers have been inducted in schools to ensure proper pupil-teacher ratio (PTR) as well as optimum utilisation of the available strength of the teaching faculty in the interest of students. There are still some disparities between schools. An online survey will be conducted to know the status of the PTR in various schools. We are trying to address the gaps with the rationalization of teachers. In some schools the number of students is higher compared to that of the teachers while in other schools the number of students is low".

Chatterjee mentioned about the students-teachers ratio in various levels of school education. In primary level there are 20 students against one teacher while in case of upper primary, secondary and higher secondary the numbers are 41, 41 and 49 respectively.

Chatterjee said that the government has not only opened 2975 additional schools since 2011 but 73 secondary schools have been upgraded to higher secondary and started 92 English medium schools in the last one year. "We had a target of 100 schools in one year and we are just 8 short of the target.

When asked about the mid-day meal in schools, the minister told the House that there is no problem regarding mid-day meals in schools. During his speech the minister blamed the erstwhile Left Front government for closing down schools one after another.
